ICAN PASTEL CONFERENCE 2020 (SOFT PASTEL)

This year I will be teaching the three following session at the

ICAN PASTEL CONFERENCE

There are many sessions in pastel with some prominent pastel artists as instructors and speakers. If you are interested in attending the conference or volunteering you can register at

www.pastelartists.ca

 JUMP DIRECTLY WHOLEHEARTEDLY IN!

WEDNESDAY JUNE 3RD (1/2 SESSION)

Until you can figure out your focal point it can be hard to jump in whole heartedly and express your ideas in a meaningful way. Learn to be brave and to paint with expression. In this session you will learn important steps to identify focal point, and edit out visual information that can be overwhelming and unnecessary. Using principles of composition, strategies of colour contrast, and varying pastel applications, participants will learn how to create more engaging paintings.

COLOUR FOR IMPACT

THURSDAY JUNE 4TH (FULL DAY)

If you are a pastelist then you are also someone who loves colour! The huge assortment of colours and pastel types available on the market today is exciting, but it can be overwhelming trying to make sense of it all. Understanding colour theory can be helpful but how do we  apply these theories directly to our work? This workshop will help you simplify what you see and give structure to colour. Learn to connect colour to it's correct value, how to use colour temperature for visual impact, and see how simplified palettes create atmospheric and emotionally engaging work. Learning these strategies will help you become more confident with colour, and create stronger images that are no longer overworked or muddy.

ON THE SURFACE OF IT...

FRIDAY JUNE 5TH (2 HR DEMO)

Tired of the limitations and costs of pre-made pastel paper? Learn to create your own pastel surfaces in this 2 hour hands on demo. Pre-made papers can be wonderful to work on but they can be expensive, hard to get, and limited in size and colour. Knowing how to prepare your own papers can be a convenience that will save you money, and give you flexibility with size, colour and surface texture.

This demonstration will show how to prepare several pastel ground recipes and show you great options of papers and substrates available to use. You will also learn how to refresh the tooth on an overworked pieces so you can rework the image instead of throwing it away. With a variety of textures available to meet your painting style, you will have the freedom to make your paper as you need it, and in the sizes you need. Students will be allowed to practice making paper and test surfaces for final effect.

"I attended Jessica Master's July, 2017 workshop held in Thornbury, Ontario, and can very much recommend Ms. Master's  approaches to using pastels and teaching.  Jessica is a terrifically generous teacher with materials and her demos, and has developed the uncanny ability to work with each participant at the right level.  Great planning and execution provided comfortable working spaces.  Fit this workshop into your schedule."  Catherine
