Oil painting workshops - all levels

Painting with oils captures the light, surface and atmosphere of a subject like no other medium, and it is flexible, allowing the artist to be expressive and abstract, or to render the subject with accurate realism. These workshops will teach you how to handle oil paint with the confidence you need to create images filled with light, colour and atmosphere. Whether you’re new to the medium or an experienced painter this workshop will develop new skills and challenge your

approach to working.

Learn to:

Mix colour with confidence
Learn principles to develop a strong composition
Develop skillful brush work to keep colours and shapes clean and bright
Simply your subject and build your painting in stages
Create a strong focal point to express your meaning
Learn how and when to use mediums
Discussions on colour including value structures, simplified palettes, and colour temperature

Workshop includes:

Painting demonstration that will take you through the entire painting process
Colour mixing demonstration using a split complementary palette.
Daily exercises designed to teach concepts
Description of materials, and how to choose what works for you
Slide show of current and historical painters to visualize concepts
Group discussions
Individual tutoring to deal with your specific needs and goals

Pastel workshop - All levels

COLOUR AND LIGHT in SOFT PASTEL

In this workshop, we learn to make sense of the colours in our palette and use them to build pastel work that is fresh and bright, avoiding work that is muddy and over worked. Begin to understand your light source so you can make creative decisions that pay attention to colour harmony and balance, while infusing energy and atmosphere into your work. Group discussion and a pastel demonstration will guide you through all the important stages of building your pastel and will include:

Understanding colour and value
Colour temperature - and how to use it
Using broken colour
Putting colour harmony and balance into your work
Understanding and using reflected light

Each workshop includes handouts, demonstrations, individual tutoring to deal with your specific needs and goals, group discussion and a final critique to provide you with great "next steps". Exercises are designed to develop new skills and challenge our approach to working.

COVID POLICY

In my workshops I require all participants to be fully vaccinated and to follow mask and social distancing guidelines in place at the time of workshop.

When students arrive you will be asked a series of Covid screening questions to make sure we are all healthy and safe. Hand sanitizer, masks and wipes are available to everyone.

Class registration is limited to 8 students. Each student will be given their own table allowing everyone to work with safe 6 ft social distancing.

CANCELLATION POLICY
I require 30 days for any cancellation to receive full refund. Less than 30 days - I will do whatever I can to fill your spot and give you a refund less - $50 processing fee.

Selection of hog hair oil brushes

I believe it's important to have proper brushes, but they don't have to expensive ones. In my painting practice and teaching I use the squared shape of a Bright or Flat. Please bring:

#'s 2,4,6,8,10 Brights, flats & or Filberts in hog hair (Multiples of some can be useful).
I also like to have a small Synthetic brush details brush #2 in a Bright, Flat and or Round

*We will talk about how to clean and care for your brushes so you have them for years to come.

Disposable palette paper - 12"x16" (preferably grey tint not white )
Canvas pad 12"x16"
A roll of Blue industrial Paper towel (available Canadian tire or Home dept)
Barrier cream or gloves
Small metal container with lid for medium
Travel or table top easel (email me if this is difficult-I have a few)
Apron
Sketch book, pencil, eraser, ruler
Black "paint tip" marker
Plain masking tape (not green)
Gamblin's Gamsol Odourless Mineral Spirits (please do not bring any other brand).
Painting medium - Gamblin's Neo Megilp or solvent free gel (No Liquin please)
2 sealed jars: 1 for clean solvent and 1 for dirty solvent
